Asigra's secure, encrypted, offsite cloud backup solution is agentless, thereby significantly reducing administrative overhead in ongoing maintenance. This agentless architecture only requires a single dedicated port on firewall devices for communication, so has a hugely reduced attack surface area. In addition, the solution does not require expensive Vendor supplied appliances to be deployed meaning that there isn’t a high upfront cost to implement the solution.

 

Experience has shown that a significant amount of backup failures can be traced back to agent failure, whether this be an interoperability issue with an installed application, addition of a recent patch, or an agent that needs updating. As our solution is agentless, this potential for failure is significantly reduced. In addition to this though, the solution automatically and continually ‘heals’ itself by verifying the logical and physical integrity of the data written to the storage systems, ensuring that the data is actually restorable by simulating real recoveries without the need to deploy expensive DR/Sandbox equipment.

Any cloud based service will generally operate at a speed determined by the lowest common denominator – usually this is the connectivity to the cloud service. Our solution reduces the requirement for high cost, super fast connectivity by utilising the following technologies:

1. De-duplication - our technology supports local/client-side deduplication at Local Area Network (LAN) level as well as global deduplication (known as Common File Elimination) across all protected sites. Our solution identifies duplicate data by looking for the same data selected for backup more than once. All data is compared based on its content, so it does not matter if the files are on different servers or have different names. Common data is stored to the appropriate repository and a pointer/stub is used to point from the data’s original location to the library location. This is a continuous process, as common data can appear at any time.
2. Data compression – the ratio achieved with data compression is dependent on data type. Higher compression ratios can be achieved for databases than for image or audio files. Since, compressing already compressed data can increase the file size, Asigra technology has the intelligence to detect compressed files and it skips re-compression of such files

   

Of course any prospective change to an existing backup solution has to deliver real benefits to the business, but critically, we understand that this also needs to represent cost savings. Disaster Avoidance Strategy Planning
